Look at all the activity! A Dad taking photos of the kids, a man walking a dog, two women chatting in the water, two women lying down sunning, and people sitting or standing at picnic tables...I count 21 people and one dog in the photo.

Taken on the island of Nåttarö (I've seen it spelled Nåtarö, too), south of Nynäshamn, which is south of Stockholm, Sweden. It's about a 1.5 hour train/bus ride from Stockholm. Then the ferry ride is about 25 minutes.

This island is known for it's sand. There's also a sheltered harbor where boaters come every summer and just park for a week or many weeks. They relax, let the kids play, socialize in the evenings....

A typical scene in the Stockholm archipelago. Elin Nordegren bought a home in the archipelago. Her home is not in this photo.

This is what Wikipedia says about the Stockholm Archipelago:
The archipelago extends from Stockholm roughly 60 kilometers to the east. In a north-south direction, it mainly follows the coastline of the provinces Södermanland and Uppland, reaching roughly from Öja island, south of Nynäshamn to Väddö north of Norrtälje. It is separated from Åland by a stretch of water named South Kvarken. A separate group of islands lies further north, near the town of Öregrund. There are approximately 30,000 islands and islets.[1] Some of its more well known islands are Dalarö, Finnhamn, Grinda, Husarö, Ingarö, Isö, Ljusterö, Möja, Nämdö, Rödlöga, Tynningö, Utö, Svartsö and Värmdö.

The biggest towns of the archipelago, apart from Stockholm, are Gustavsberg and Vaxholm. The village of Ytterby, famous among chemists for naming no fewer than four chemical elements (erbium, terbium, ytterbium and yttrium), is situated on Resarö in the Stockholm Archipelago.

The shipping routes from the Baltic to Stockholm pass through the archipelago. There are three main entrances suitable for deep-draught craft, namely, those near Landsort, Sandhamn, and Söderarm.

Cruising between the small islands through the Stockholm Archipelago to either Åland or Helsinki in Finland is an experience. Weather allowing, the experience can be enhanced by enjoying a spectacular sunset from the deck that during summer months lasts until 10:30 - 11:00 o’clock at night.

When I lived in Stockholm I created a blog. Please visit it for more insights. It's called D &J's Marvelous Sweden Adventure.

Good information on the archipelago is here.

the mahabharata is this really long book that tells the story of humanity and why we keep recircling ourselves in the same despairing out looks over and over again like a snake eating its own tail.

there is a famous excerpt from it call the bhagavad gita. it is a treatise on why brothers must go to war. and these brothers are divine, born half breeds of the gods.

basically, in the long book, one brother is a gambler. this means risk. it means business. it means making deals and deceiving others.

doesn't this sound like modern times?

anyway, the brother takes his risks too far. in a fit of very contrived madness, and obviously under the influence of greed and wealth and promise, he bets his entire family's independence against a very brief business venture. or, as we'd say in vegas, daddy needed new shoes so he rolled them dice!!!

we are in this same position. usury is rising up again. it is the same tenacious and disgusting spirit creature it has always been and will always be.

it is invested in all of our hearts and our international systems of commerce. it has leached its spirit so effectively as to be equally positive and negative. usury funds and supports peace projects, outreach programs, education endeavors, and medical advancement.

usury is a very powerful force and is both user and usurer. if you borrow money, you are committing usury. you are not exempt. you are still playing into the game that leads to the enslavement of ALL your brothers and sister.

if you lend money as a usurer, you are also committing usury, but you already know this.

what a lot of people don't seem to associate with the past is that usury ALWAYS leads to massive civil unrest. wwii was a war against usury and the attempts of international banking and industrial cartels to strangle hold the world. usury won and wiped up both sides in blood and loss and resentment and lingering hatred that still lives in the hearts of so many people.

once again, we stand opportunistically at a point where we can summon the strength to crush usury from becoming the world operating system.

can we figure this one out together?

Barb

I enrolled in graduate school at Duquesne University in spring 1998 to begin work on my Master's degree in English Education. I was excited to get into the classroom and work with students. My internship was at Baldwin High School where I was a student myself. It was surreal giving my sister a hall pass and teaching a friend of our family, who we would see socially on the weekends. While the internship was awesome, student teaching was the real deal.

I won't forget the day I walked into the graduate offices and was given my student teaching placement. In script handwriting it said "Barbara Schomer, Mt Lebanon High School". While I didn't know the woman, I knew the school. Mt Lebanon is one of the top public high schools on the east coast, and I was excited to get into such a prestigious school. My grades were near perfect, my professors lauded me each week, and now I was going to Lebo.

In late Spring I went to meet Barb Schomer. She was a short, older woman who demanded respect and was a solidly important part of the English faculty. I remember the box of novels she handed me to read over the summer and her showing me "my desk" in the corner near hers. We talked for quite a bit and I was under the impression that she was one of the more rigorous cooperating teachers in our program, but I was use to working with these sorts of educators. Student teaching began day one with students and I stayed until late December. Barb started our relationship as the pedagogist and me as the clerical mind. I helped keep things organized, took attendance, kept us both sane. She said she loved that about me. She told me that at home Barb's husband, Bru, took on that role and it was nice to have me around. Her former student teacher was a performer with a background in theatre. Barb would hand her the lesson plan and the woman would do it. That was just enough. Then I came along with a background in literature and a strong pedagogical presence. By the semester's end, our relationship shifted. I continued my clerical organization but segued them smoothly into my relationship teaching the students and building a family in the classroom. I finished that semester winning Duquesne's Student Teacher of the Year Award and that had everything to do with Barb.

I learned so much from this woman. I learned to always have things planned out "in case you get hit by a truck" as she would say. Have plans more than a week out. Always praise students before critiquing them, always help them genuinely get better in whatever you're teaching, balance the line between teacher and friend.

I left Duquesne, Mt Lebanon and Pittsburgh in the summer of 1999 and for the first few years I reconnected with Barb and Bru over holidays. I remember when we took Claire to dinner and they were able to enjoy this new little girl throwing her cheerios across the table at them. They laughed and her and enjoyed her as their own grandchild. By now Barb retired and Bru still taught science nearby. Barb, always an outdoors women, spent more and more time volunteering around the world and living in their West Virginian cabin. She even made it out to AZ to visit friends where I was able to spend an evening with her.

In 2010, Barb was diagnosed with Cancer. Her and Bru quickly moved to Centreville, VA so Barb could be treated at Georgetown University Hospital's cancer center. We continued our relationship via email She was able to visit her cabin and take short walks in nature. By spring she was able to make a trip to Las Vegas to visit family and I was happy to hear her traveling and getting by. By fall she'd been to Florida and was doing well. When she could not get out as much I printed and framed a photo she liked of mine that I shot in the Coconino National Forest this past March. In early fall Barb traveled to PA for a family reunion, and I wish I were there so I too could talk to her once more.

I was not there. I was teaching in Arizona where my own students tell me what I mean to them. They share their dreams, hopes, fears, and loves with me. They listen to my words of wisdom passed down from Barb. I had the honor of passing on Barb's wisdom to both Joe Abbruscato and Lindsey Costley, my own two student teachers, and I live my teaching life in the shadowing grace of a giant of a woman who will always be missed by me and never forgotten, as today Barbara succumbed to her Cancer with Bru and her daughter's at her side. She is peacefully walking the trails of nature, caving to the depths of infinity and watching over all of us. Thank you, Barb, I love you.

[Just a disclaimer. I did not shoot this photo.]

Sosa was photographed recently during an appearance at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

"He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin," Polihronis said. "Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double. Part of (the photo appearance) is just the lighting.

"He is in the middle of doing a cleansing process to his skin. The picture is deceiving. He said, 'If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. When you see me in person, it is not going to seem like the picture.'

"People who saw him in person did not react the same way. He can't believe it is such a big deal."

This photo appears on a post titled Sammy Sosa Bleached Skin Controversy" at the Delusional Cubs Fan blog.

Duck Romance

One of the things that I like to do when I'm shooting, is take advantage of the in-camera color / contrast controls within the camera. Nikon calls this “Picture Control” and I'm sure Canon / Sony / Olympus have similar features. I do this even when I shoot RAW and here's why... I find myself often enough, when reviewing pictures on my monitor at home, actually preferring the in-camera results better than my edits. I really like the in-camera colors, contrast and sharpness that I can produce. I just can't seem to duplicate this look with editing. This is the reason I prefer Nikon's Capture NX editing program to do the bulk of my editing because you can apply, or ignore all your in-camera settings with the click of a button... and for me that is invaluable. I feel like I'm at the point where, a lot of times (unless doing HDR of course) I can achieve the look I'm going for in-camera, which is my ultimate goal so I can do more shooting and less editing.

I generally prefer the settings I used in this photo – which seem to work best outside at low ISO's. And that is the “Vivid” setting. But I don't stop there... I usually crank the sharpness all the way up, contrast all the way up, brightness all the way to the left, Saturation all the way up and Hue I leave in the middle. Admittedly, this does not work the best with people portraiture where you generally prefer a more neutral tone. Usually I set the “Picture Control” to the “neutral” setting for people portraits. I find by doing this, it really brings out those bright Disney colors and tones we've all grown to love.

One final reason I use the in-camera “Picture Control” is because I find it gives me a better preview of the potential of the photo I will select and edit. For me, personally, I find this offers a better look of what the picture could be rather than looking at a neutral looking photo on your camera LCD or computer monitor.

Sorry so wordy, but that is a little behind the thought process of my ultimate goal of mastering (when applicable) in-camera results.

Of course, this picture is straight off the camera :=0) And picture control just saved my a ½ hour worth of editing! The previous picture I posted was also straight off the camera, with similar settings.

Plate Lunch Special

We asked where the locals like to eat and were pointed to Papa Ole's Restaurant on King Kamehameha Highway on the North Shore of Oahu. This little diner inside a non-descript strip was the real deal and the food was fantastic.

Hawaiians love the plate lunch special, which usually goes for about .50 and includes your choice of meat plus two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. Look at the size of those short ribs... real authentic Maui ribs... not the stuff you buy at Costco. The food was great and the service was friendly.

We later found out that the owner's nephew is none other than former pro wrestler, The Rock. There is an autographed picture of him hanging on the wall.

My son is throughly enjoying the jacuzzi at a hotel while we are on vacation in Illinois. After a good swim and the jacuzzi he was more relaxed mentally and physically than I'd seen in years. What a great time to get in some fun like this on our vacation!

If anyone wonders about the odd details for my son, you are seeing the implant device to control seizures and also the tubing for a shunt system to deal with his hydrocephalus. My son had severe brain damage from birth but no one would have ever thought he'd make it to adulthood, soon to be 29! Egads I am feeling very old. This was our big trip back to Illinois for the first time in four years. Mom here needs another two years to recover before we try such an odyssey again.
