We asked the kids to design a postcard for themselves depicting their imaginary vacation, we took names and addresses, and we're mailing them back at the end of the summer.

Most media attention paid to Afghanistan this month revolved around a scandal involving General David Petraeus and General John Allen, the two most recent U.S. military commanders there. However, that scandal has had little or no impact on daily life in Afghanistan. Of greater concern there is the continued insecurity. As the 2014 withdrawal of NATO troops approaches, people are leaving Afghanistan at a higher rate than they have since 2002. Iran and Saudi Arabia, rivals for regional influence, are making investments in the country's infrastructure, each hoping to be the stronger partner after 2014. But it's far from clear what the future will bring. These photos show just a glimpse of this conflict over the past month, part of the ongoing series here on Afghanistan. [37 photos]

Blue Jays is a 1975 album by Justin Hayward and John Lodge. It was recorded and released during the Moody Blues' five-year hiatus.
The track "Blue Guitar", originally released as a non-album single credited to Hayward and Lodge in September 1975 but performed by Hayward with the band 10cc, was added to the album upon its re-release on CD in 1987.
In 2004, the album was remastered and released on CD with the same bonus tracks.

A Kentucky soldier two months from coming home was stabbed to death by a teenager in Afghanistan after he stopped to play with a group of local children, it emerged today.
Sgt Michael Cable, 26, of Philpot, Kentucky, was guarding a meeting between Afghan and U.S. officials in the east of the country near the Pakistan border on Wednesday when a teenager, believed to be aged 16, attacked him from behind with a large knife.
The soldier, who would have been returning from Afghanistan for a vacation in June and then permanently in September, was playing with local children when the attack took place, according to reports.

Members of his family flew to Dover Air Base in Delaware on Thursday to watch his body returned to U.S. soil and remembered their fun, outdoors loving son.
His older sister Wendy Dickens remembered his surprise visit to the family in November.
'He was goofy the whole time and riding and pushing himself on a cart through the store even though he was a grown-up. He just, he was always a kid at heart,' she told Tri-state.com
His mother Vickie Johnson said: 'I'm so proud of him because he done it for the United States of America.'
Ms Dickens and Cable's other sister Lisa spoke of his great rapport with their children and how difficult it would be to explain his death to them.
'I miss him so much,' Lisa Osborne said. 'I had already started day dreaming about when he came home. Playing football with Dave and Kids in back yard. My boys have always seen him as their hero.'

Writing on Facebook, Dickens wrote: 'Trying to figure out how to answer a 5 yr and 9 yr olds questions about death and dying. My little brother was my children's hero they thought he was invincible. He was there own special GI Joe and now he's gone.'
The fact that he was being kind to the local community when he died has been noted by the family, who say he went into the army to 'help'. He signed up in 2007 and had already completed a tour of Iraq.
'He was very determined,' his brother Raymond Johnston Jr - named after their father - told the Courier Press.
'He just felt that he could really be a good soldier. He wanted to help. He was prepared before he left for anything that happened.'
Former school friends from Daviess County High remembered his sense of humor and athleticism.
He was a Daviess County runner and becomes the second soldier in his running class to be killed.
Cable's teammate Matt Rowe, who currently coaches at Daviess County, said. 'Michael's attitude was contagious. He loved life, cared deeply for his friends, and was always the first to make you laugh. He was the type of person that always had your back, even though he might be going through a tougher situation at the time. His friendship was so sincere and Michael is someone that none of us will ever forget.'
Michael Cable's death is another in a tragic month for U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
14 soldiers have been killed this month, a sharp increase in the death toll which was 4 in January and February.
An investigation into Cable's death is ongoing.
He was guarding swearing-in ceremony of Afghan Local Police in Shinwar district in Nangarhar province.
The young man who carried out the attack escaped into Pakistan. The Taliban said he was acting independently but had joined the Islamic militant movement since fleeing the scene.
Cable's funeral will take place on Saturday

Donata’s house offers all the special charm, character and seclusion of a private home and garden, with the additional advantage of having the restaurant, tennis, playground and other children’s activities within easy reach.
At the far corner of Chiarentana is the house lived in by Donata, one of the two Origo sisters. When, in the early eighties, Donata began to renovate the square fortified farmhouse for many centuries occupied by 7 peasant families, an open informal garden was designed to blend into the surrounding countryside, and rambling roses, shrubs and bulbs planted to soften the stone-flagged courtyard shaded by a large linden tree.
Recently Donata’s house has become available for rent. The house is on two levels with windows facing south over the Val d’Orcia, west beyond the horse paddocks to the sunset beyond the distant hills, and over the courtyard. From the front door steps lead down the lower garden level and an open living space with rattan sofas and armchairs and a with a spectacular view over the valley and beyond to the Monte Amiata. Large clumps of rosemary, lavender and thyme rise from the open lawn with areas where walnut, apricot, cherry, plum, quince and fig trees provide shade and seclusion. There is a rectangular swimming pool (15X5m), also looking out towards the view but tucked away where bathers cannot be seen, with a shower and changing room next door.
Doors from the courtyard and the main door on the west side lead into the ground floor. There is an entrance hall, a cloak room for guests, a library/study, a large sunny living room with windows looking out both ways over the courtyard and the valley, with a pretty fireplace with antique Neapolitan tiles. The dining room is a beautiful tiled kitchen with a raised fireplace, a large table extendable to 14 places, and a smaller kitchen next door where the cooking is actually done. Next to the dining room is a comfortable and informal living/playroom with satellite TV and an entire book-case with children’s books, some dating back to Donata’s childhood. French doors lead to a wisteria and rose-shaded pergola. This becomes the main dining space in summer, in the shade at lunch time and looking out towards the sunset in the evening. A wood oven in front of the pergola can be used to cook pizza and succulent roast meat. A guest room with twin queen-size beds and en suite bathroom is also on this floor.
A flight of stairs leads up to the first floor, where a suite with a room with a large double bed and another with twin beds sharing a bathroom and a smaller washroom with basin and toilet is ideal for a family. Two other large rooms with double beds, each with en suite bathroom are also on this floor. One is called the “African” room for its paintings and sculptures from Zimbabwe, the other the “yellow” room for its shades of wash on the walls, curtains and bedspread, carpets from Morocco, and sunny exposure. Both rooms look south over the valley. Antique family furniture, paintings, and objects can be found in all rooms in the house.

This big, fat man was sound asleep when I walked past, perfectly content to have the sun shining on his enormous stomach. I have no idea whose family he was part of, where he came from, or what he was doing...

A storm had moved into the area where we were vacationing at the beach. It was a very active storm with quite a few spectacular bolts so I thought that this was as good time to capture a lightening storm as a photograph.
Lightening is always one of the more popular subjects for photography but one that is demanding in patience and timing. I was fortunate that I was several floors up at the hotel and that the surrounding terrain was relatively flat giving me a wide open vista. I set up tripod on the passageway and pointed the camera towards the town of Wrightsville.
So for twenty minutes I kept snapping away at the storm but it seems that no matter how long the shutter speed setting I set for the camera, I always seem to be missing the moment when a bolt struck the ground. Except this one time when I caught two bolts hitting the ground nearly simultaneously. It is not the most spectacular of the lightening I saw that night but it is still gratifying to have this shot.

On Thursday during our Smoky Mountain vacation, Jim and I drove from Sevierville/Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to Gatlinburg. We paid for tickets to ride the tram up to Ober Gatlinburg. We've been to Gatlinburg many times (mostly in December and around Christmastime) but had never ridden the tram. In fact we remembered one year was bitter cold and the tram was not running when we arrived. It was a very pleasant ride to the top of the mountain.

I started my summer vacation yesterday and took my family to a cottage a few hours drive from where we live. By coincidence my summer vacation happened to start on the same day the Twitter Photo Challenge group published this weeks challenge. And even more by coincidence (or perhaps not, considering it's summer), this week's challenge is "Vacation".
Here's the first picture I imagined when seeing what the topic was. Someone shunning their clothes, running into the water. Believe it or not: That was exactly what my oldest son did by himself when we arrived at the cottage. So I really just had to point and shoot :-)

When we were leaving the convenience store where we had found the Hillbilly Schoolbus, the Krispy Kreme guy was swapping out the day-old goods for new doughnuts.
I asked him if he had ever been hijacked. He laughed and answered no. Sara followed up by asking him what he was going to do with the day-olds. He said he had a bag and offered them to her.

Pines Point campground. Unbeknownst to us because we'd arrived just as it was getting dark, right behind our campsite was a bog. Each site had a small trail leading down to the river, where you could go swimming or tubing (if you were equipped for it).
These sites have upright grills instead of fire rings, and each site also had that gallows-thing in the middle of it -- a wooden post with a bar and a hook. We hung our lantern off it at night. I have no idea what it's supposed to be used for. I forgot to ask.
Pines Point had a summer campground host, a couple, and they were really, really nice, and kept the place looking fantastic. They had firewood _and_ ice for sale (wow), and the restroom was so clean. (No showers at this one.) They were a bit surprised to see us out-of-staters cruise in; nearly everyone who uses this particular campground is from Michigan.
Oh, and this campground also had a small population of stray cats, who'd apparently been dumped in the area and came and begged at the various campsites.

The water was really warm Sunday night so I had to go wading in it at every opportunity. My favorite activity while I was there was to go out and walk along the beach letting the tide bring the water over my feet and legs. Saturday when Mark and I went out we found a spot where we waded up to my mid thigh and then there was a little island to stand on where the beach seemed to start over. It was just great.

All the tables where ready for the guests to arrive.

Couting the days till i go on vacations to the island of margarita. Im going On the 19th ... maybe some time to relax a bit . Still a little shaken by last night , but im doing alright :)

Well i dont know theyll probably slap me and call for ther buff up boyfriends to kick my butt .
But still if i can do it, well its worth a try ! Hahaha . I gotta get some adventures :D
